Nikolaus has a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he attended on a Regents Scholarship. He has developed software for source code comparison, medical devices, mobile terrain database applications, web applications, mobile applications, and network emulation applications.
Nikolaus has advised or offered opinions on over 40 software intellectual property (IP) matters, including instances of patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, and software plagiarism, where his detailed and focused analyses have been critical factors. He has also advised on numerous pre-litigation investigations, patent prosecutions, and evidence of use analyses. These projects have included examining software source code and binary code, reverse engineering software, and testing the functionality of software on a variety of desktop, mobile, and embedded platforms. The testing of software functionality has included recording and analyzing the network traffic generated by various websites, desktop applications, and mobile applications.
